I've always had boxers and currently have a two year old male boxer. He's doing well, although I've been lazy about walks. Overly playful, but not timid or aggressive etc.
Wife wanted a yorkie and we found one at the pound three days ago. It was found in a wealthy neighborhood according to the papers that came with the adoption and is 1 year old. He was found in a supermarket parking lot. He's been neutered and still has stitches.
I have only had boxers (3 over 30 years) as an adult. I don't know anything about yorkies or other breeds to speak of.
My general observations of the yorkie is he was not mistreated, not trained in any way (doesn't know what sit is), maybe came from someone elderly or perhaps even a daughter going off to college.
I'm taking him on a number of one block walks each day on a short "choke chain" type of leash. I'm just trying to get him to heel on the left (I was brought up old school) and heel next to me. He's doing good. When he is more comfortable, I'll work with sit etc.
I'm treating him like I would a boxer, meaning can't get on the sofa, can't come into the kitchen, heel, sit, stay although just working on heel now. No jumping up on you either.
Feisty little creature! The boxer wants to play and he lunges at the boxer growling. Boxer thinks its just play, and the yorkie thinks he just won a battle. I think this is just play on the yorkies part as well.
As part of the adoption, we have a free vet visit in 1.5 weeks.
Questions (I'm sure there will be more questions to come):
From a "Cesar sort of who's the pack leader standpoint, if you have a yorkie who is acting dominant but a boxer who acts like its just play; both males. Who becomes dominant?
Day 1, the yorkie pee'd in every corner of the house. The yorkie is recently neutered and the boxer is not. I assume that is the yorkie just marking territory. A couple of accidents in the house, but the yorkie has to be confused with going from kennel to kennel and then to our house.
Last night I worked until 2:30 am. I picked up his water at 7pm and fed him at about 4pm. I took him out for the last time before going to bed so he hadn't had water for over 7 hours. He had both urinated and pooped.
He slept in a patio area where the boxer also stays at night. When I got up at about 10am, he had still soiled the floor (both urinated and pooped) and quite a bit. He did the same thing the first night but had water later.
Do yorkies have to go out more frequently than big dogs?
Does anybody have any general comments regarding yorkies or anything I should be doing?
