Thursday, January 20, 2005 - Page updated at 03:26 P.M. Rescued dog blamed for $1,000 of damage from chewing The Associated Press SPOKANE — In the three years since Mark Anderson answered a newspaper advertisement for a free puppy that needed a good home, the female black Labrador has chewed through a couch, a window sill, two cell phones and two carpets. "So she's cost me about a grand," Anderson said as he stroked Midnight, who answers to Middy. "She's a goat. She'll eat anything." That damage seems paltry now that the dog has saved him from a house fire. "He would have been dead if it hadn't been for his dog, absolutely," city fire Capt. Mike Zambryski said Wednesday. Anderson, 39, said he fell asleep on his couch Tuesday night watching David Letterman on television and was awakened by Middy's barking about 8 a.m. Wednesday. "I couldn't breathe. I couldn't see 2 feet in front of me. I realized I was in the middle of a fire," he said. "I was going to sleep right through it." Choking on smoke, Anderson managed to head for a spot of light that turned out to be a window, opened it, pushed out the screen and jumped outside — followed by Middy. Most of the house was destroyed. "I'm so lucky to be alive. It's just starting to hit me," Anderson said. "Thank God I didn't put her out this morning." Fire Battalion Chief Bob Green said the flames were ignited in curtains next to a baseboard heater. Anderson said he had a smoke detector, but it was unclear whether it was working. "Obviously, the smoke detector didn't wake him up," Zambryski said. Copyright © 2005 The Seattle Times Company seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002156007_webdog20.html

Anyone catch why the dog is being blamed for the $1000 worth of chewing damage?

OH MY someone needs some sleep, when I read it I saw dog then goat. Wondered to myself Is it a goat or a dog, I had to read it twice. Ungrateful people, hes lucky he had the dog. I bet the dog was an angel and he just wanted a funny story to tell. The headline should read. "Moron leaves space heater dangerously close to curtains, heroic dog saves life". Besides that since when does getting a "free" puppy qualify as a rescue... Oh please They could spare the bleeding heart story.

See... if the guy would have held out a little longer he could have blamed it on the fire. Wouldn't have had to pay a dime.

Brooke, you think like my niece, only hers was a refrigerator. It quit, so they turned it into their insurance saying it was struck by lightening in a recent electrical storm we had. Possible, but not likely, and especially since I had heard it was already "acting up". What this has to do with dogs....I have no idea. ;D
