LAKETON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Once he was homeless and hungry.
But now Buddy, a blond charmer of a cocker spaniel, lives in the lap of luxury and has won world renown.
Buddy lays claim to having the longest eyelashes of any dog in the world. He has a certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records to prove it.
Given his past, the honor makes him something of a male canine Cinderella.
Warner and Barbara Carlson went looking for a dog in January 2003, several months after burying their beloved long-living cocker.
Warner was immediately drawn to the cage at the Humane Society and Animal Rescue of Muskegon where Buddy — then called Buffy — stood alone.
Buddy, about a year and a half old and apparently a purebred, was lonely. So were the Carlsons.
Warner fell for the dog, but the canine was so thin the animal shelter wouldn’t let him go.
“We had to wait about 10 days while they fattened him up,” Carlson said. “Nobody had fed him.”
Someone found the dog loose on the streets and turned him over to the shelter.
Days went by and no one called to claim him. Until the Carlsons came along.
What is known is that recently, Buddy was recognized by London-based Guinness as having the “longest eyelashes in the world on a dog.”
Buddy is taking it all in stride.
“He’s still as obnoxious as ever,” Carlson said as Buddy crawled all over him.
Buddy’s eyelashes were long when he was adopted, and they just kept growing. Carlson thinks they are growing still.
Folks kept telling the Carlsons that Buddy ought to get some kind of award.
So his masters took pictures, got a signed letter verifying the length from veterinarian Nancy Rutherford, and filled out a bunch of papers sent to them by the Guinness record book company.
The fame is his. But alas, Buddy, who is unemployed, won’t get any money for the honor.
Still, it is likely his name will be in the 2005 issue of the Guinness Book of World Records. The Guinness folks make no guarantees.
Although Buddy is forbidden to sleep in the master bedroom, he does have full run of the house
When word came that he had set a world record, he celebrated with a chunk of steak.
Then he was back to his everyday life, barking at raccoons, barking at visitors, barking at moving tree limbs.
Living with a celebrity isn’t always easy. There are a lot of worries.
“I dropped him off at the groomers one day, and when I drove up to get him I remembered that I hadn’t told them not to cut his eyelashes,” Carlson said.
Luckily, they hadn’t.
After all, Leno and Letterman could call any minute
