DETROIT -- A loose dog was reunited with her owner after her escape forced Detroit police to close a stretch of the Southfield Freeway Thursday morning.
DOG CHASE
The Afghan dog, named Tony, was spotted running on the northbound lanes of the freeway, just before Interstate 96, for more than 30 minutes. Detroit police blocked the freeway lanes just before 8 a.m. EST in an attempt to capture the dog and bring it to safety.
Officers used a snare to catch the dog, but after a few minutes it broke loose and continued on its run along the freeway. Motorists who were stopped along the freeway also tried to help officers, but the dog appeared to be too quick and dodged everyone and everything in its path.
The dog finally rested along the edge of the freeway for a few minutes, allowing her owner to pick her up. The man made a leash out of a belt and walked the dog to safety.
The dog had appeared to be frightened of the officers trying to retrieve her, but owner Reggie Nesbitt said the dog let him come to get her.
"She knew it was me," Nesbitt said.
Nesbitt said Tony had been running loose since 5 p.m. EST Wednesday. He said he was patrolling his neighborhood and hadn't had any sightings of the dog until his neighbors alerted him Thursday morning, saying the dog was on the Southfield Freeway.
Nesbitt said he headed for the freeway.
"I located the choppers up above, and I said, 'That might be her,'" Nesbitt said.
Nesbitt said Tony is an American champion dog. She had puppies about five months ago, and they will also be competitors.
"I thank the police department and Michigan State Police for helping me find her," Nesbitt said.
Police have reopened the freeway.
