N.J. Animal Control Officer Pleads Guilty
Associated Press
HIGHLAND PARK, N.J. - An animal control officer who botched the euthanization of a dog that survived a garbage truck ride to a landfill pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment.
William "Billy" Paul, 45, was ordered to surrender his animal control officer license and pay more than $700 in fines, court costs and assessments.
The dog, a 5-year-old shepherd-Labrador mix, was brought to the shelter in December by a woman who wanted it euthanized because she was moving to a place that did not allow pets.
Paul tranquilized the dog and injected a lethal drug, then listened for a heartbeat - in a noisy room with other animals present. Believing he had killed the dog, he took it to a trash tranfer station, where it was compacted with other trash on a garbage truck.
A worker spotted the dog as it poked its head from the rear of the truck the next day before it was to be dumped at the county landfill. The dog was taken to a local kennel, where it was adopted.

Dog Gets New Life, Animal Officer Loses Job Man Barred From Caring For Animals POSTED: 12:50 p.m. EST March 3, 2004 UPDATED: 1:21 p.m. EST March 3, 2004 HIGHLAND PARK, N.J. -- It's the story of one lucky dog -- and an animal control officer who's now looking for another line of work. William Paul pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of animal cruelty and abandonment. Paul was suspended without pay last December. After believing he had killed the dog with an injection, Paul dumped it at a New Jersey garbage transfer station, where it was compacted with other trash on a garbage truck. A worker spotted the dog as it poked its head from the rear of the truck the next day -- just before it was to be dumped at a landfill. The 5-year-old shepherd-Labrador mix was taken to a local kennel, where it was adopted. Paul, who had served in Perth Amboy for nearly 20 years, is now barred from caring for animals at public and private facilities. He also was told to surrender his animal control officer license. Brooke, that's the shelter that my friend Lorraine Healy, who runs Husky House, just took over . It's a horror story, there are no records of adoptions, he was funnelling money from the place, the place is a mess .

What a sad story. That dog looks a little bit like an older Petey.

Yes he does look like a Petey ;D
I don't understand how these people get the position to run these shelters into the ground. I am just amazed and how people can be so cruel.
