People line up to adopt puppies nearly killed by heat stroke
Jeff Holubitsky, Journal Staff Writer
Six puppies that nearly died of heat stroke on the weekend were hot in a different way Tuesday morning as a crowd waited hours for a chance to adopt them.
“They didn’t last long,” Edmonton Humane Society spokeswoman Melissa Boisvert said.
“They went up for adoption at noon and they were probably all adopted by 1 or 1:30 p.m.”
She said some families lined up for two hours before the shelter opened its doors at noon: “We had to take names and numbers down and file them in order.”
The lab-cross pups drew media attention because of their dramatic rescue. They now are healthy and beginning new lives in Edmonton homes.
A female with a spotted coat and blue eyes, thought to be part Catahoula leopard dog, was first to be picked up.
“So many people poured their hearts out,” Boisvert said.
The abandoned puppies were within an hour of death when they arrived at the shelter Saturday afternoon. Rescued from a property near Wetaskiwin, they suffered from severe heat stroke on the drive to Edmonton, unable to move and barely breathing.
The pups’ story also likely helped find homes for several collie pups that arrived at the shelter Monday night.
Three of seven collies had been adopted as of Tuesday afternoon.
