Last Friday our elderly neighbor came over and told me he was taking his dog to the Vet on Monday, because she had suddenly started limping on her right hind leg.
I went over to check her over, and at that time she was not limping or appear to be in any pain, but I agreed a trip to the Vet was good. We all thought probably arthritis.
When Bob took her in Monday and the Vet did x-rays, it was discovered that Shadow had advanced osteosarcoma in that leg.
Bob brought her home, knowing with this fast growing cancer they didn't have much time left, and then decided to take her right back in on Tuesday to end her suffering, because there was no point in delaying the inevitable.
What broke my heart the most, is that when I went over on Monday after she had been diagnosed and brought home, she came over to where I was sitting, laid her head on my knee and looked up at me with her big soft brown eyes as if to say, "I know. I'm ready."
RIP, sweet Shadow.
