I just finished watching the dvd (thankfully, my dvd player really IS multi-regional, wasn't sure if I could actualy play it) of Great Dog, Shame About The Handler, by Greg Derrett. What a great training video!
I have a lot of work to do, but at least now I know what to work on. I bought it at Clear Run and while it's not cheap at $62, it's well worth the money. I really like the overhead shots that clearly show what moves are being made in relation to obstacle positions. Highly recommended.

Thanks, Aussie....I love good books/video's, even if I'm not likely to actually go into the sport. Education never hurts!

The difference between good handling, and great handling is really really subtle - slight changes to timing or hand movements can make all the difference. I am using the 'Slow Down' feature of the DVD a lot. I am not naturally coordinated, and Greg Derrett makes it look so easy.
Finn and I tried the first exercise yesterday, a simple two jump arrangement with a series of front crosses in between. In our first two training sessions, we were both uncoordinated, awkward - he actully tripped me once - and I kept thinking we weren't doing it right or just couldn't do it. A real "I'm trading you in on a Border Collie" moment.
(He may have been having a "I'm trading you in on a real agility handler" moment)
I practiced my moves a few times without Finn, and we both went in and watched that part of the video again.
Then we went out and suddenly it all came together. He was jumping and I was front crossing and it all worked! Woo Hoo. We really have our work cut out for us, but I'm sold. I may go back and order the foundation work video.
