A little Background: My younger sister moved to Los Lunas, NM two years ago. When one of their sons died 4 years ago, my sister went and bought a Min Pin and they named him Max. He helped with the hurt of losing their son, because he was a living creature they had to care for like a child. And yes, like a lot of small dogs, Max is spoiled, but that still doesn't mean he deserved what happened to him last night. The neighborhood where my sister lives has tons of dogs and most of the people who own them are not what we would consider responsible dog owners. The dogs are not spayed/neutered. A lot of them run loose and the people own mostly GSD's and Pits, and of course there are a lot of mixes. There has also been many instances where people moved away and left a mother dog and her puppies behind to fend for themselves. I won't even tell the horror stories about all the cats and what people do to them. Last night my sister was walking Max like she always does. Max is always on leash. They were walking by a house and a GSD jumped the fence and attacked Max. He grabbed him on the back and swung him around etc. My sister had a walking stick and eventually was able to get the GSD to let go of Max and she carried him home, but when she called me last night she said Max was clearly in shock. She had immediately called one of the Vets in the area and was told to "wait" until this morning and see how he is. As we were talking she said Max got up, but was having trouble walking. I told her to get him to a Vet immediately, even if they had to drive to Albuquerque, which is 30 miles away. I haven't heard yet this morning how Max is, but last night my sister said they were waiting for animal control to come and talk to them about the incident. Of course it isn't the GSD's fault. It's the owners fault, but even if they say this never happened before, that is not a big help at the moment, because we all know that these type of things rarely happen "out of the blue" and there are warning signs long before an actual attack and which sadly, so many owners don't recognize or refuse to believe their dog would ever do this. I hope they get to explain to a Judge.

Oh poor Max. I feel like I know Max because you have mentioned him before. I hope he is OK. I can't believe the vet said wait until morning. I am glad you told her to go right away. Let us know as soon as you hear. How does a person enclose a dog with a fence that they can climb over. And this dog had to have shown prior aggression to dogs to just attack unprovoked like this and they had to have known that and they should have kept the dog properly contained. It is infuriating and I hope that animal control does something about it.

What a sad story and in the end, it'll be the GSD's fault and poor Max may end up paying for it with his life (along with the GSD who attacked him as well cuz you know - "that dog was always out of control")
What a load of absolute BS!
That is what pisses me off so much about people when they get a dog like a GSD (or any large breed or hell, any dog for that matter) and don't give a rats a$$ about training, keeping him/her safe or how the dog interacts with the neighborhood people or other dogs, cats ect.
It just continues to fire the breed ban types who get all frothy in the mouth over such incidents. It gives them the ammunition they need to goto city councils and demand something be done about such animals.
Sorry, I'll stop the thread-jacking here. I just hate seeing poor dogs and their owners get mauled by dogs who don't have a lick of training and owned by idiots who don't have a lick of common sense.
I hope it works out for Max Loey...keep us posted.

OH LOEY We were just talking about the little SQUIRT How horriable You see then people wonder WHY I am the way I am with my dogs. I would love to think that all 3 of mine if they got loose would never do such a thing well except BRODY but I do not know that 100% and especially if I am not there when it happens. I am a FREEK about CLOSE THE GATE, LOCK THE GATE, CHECK THE FENCE, CHECK THE KENNEL, DO NOT APPROACH ME WITH YOUR DOG UNLESS I ASK YOU TOO ETC.... I have worked on DOG TO DOG manners untill I almost PUKE, and still I have no gaurentee's unless I am with them, but I bet these IDIOTS never even gave it a thought. They probably thought it was "KEWL " when their sheppy got the demon in him to snarl and snap at other dogs, THERE ARE SOME WEIRDO'S WHO FIND THAT AWSOME They find it ego boosting because they think their dog is TOUGH the girls still try that once and awhile, especially Raven because let's face it she is young and VERY FOOLISH but I WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THAT WHAT SO EVER I hope Max is ok Loey, because like Nicki said it's like we know him from all the times you have talked him Poor little guy I hope the owner feels so POWERFUL because his BIG DOG BEAT UP A LITTLE DOG FREEKING JERK and yes the poor GSD will probably suffer along with Max, and it was'nt his fault that some STUPID MORON brought him home to live with them Let us know how Max fairs Loey. Hey Richard Lets go pay the IDIOT owners a visit I would like to knock sense in them with a CONCRETE BLOCK

Thanks, everyone. I finally called at about 9:30 their time to see how he was and my sister hadn't called the Vet yet! I told her again what I had told her last night, that dog bites are very serious, because at the very least, they can get an infection that is very hard to get rid of, even with antibiotics. I know, because when Buddy was mauled badly by the Malmute, they took him in immediately and he was put on antibiotics, but it was still touch and go for awhile as to whether he would pull through. I also told her again that I would pay the Vet bill, so she thanked me again and said she would call later to let me know what they found out. At least he is walking o.k. today, but he certainly is not feeling well at all. Now watch. Max will have to stay at the Vets and have all these treatments and I will get a bill for $1000. If that happens, I will be looking for another place to live! I haven't told Duane that I offered to pay the Vet bill, because he would be really upset about that, but I thought if I did they would take him in right away rather than wait until today, which they didn't anyway, plus I couldn't stand to think of the poor little guy suffering all night. Richard, I could just picture you and Ann in the short bus going to pay the GSD's owner a visit. Best laugh I've had today so far. It is sad though, that because of irresponsible owners two dogs have to suffer, and I still think when things like this happen it is the owner who should be pts and not the offending dog. Not really. I wouldn't go that far, but I keep thinking there has just got to be something more that can be done about these situations and I don't think the fines are stiff enough, plus if the people can't pay, they should have to do a kazillion hours of public service or something similar to get the message across to them. I will let you all know as soon as I hear.

Update:
My sister took Max to a Vet and they kept him there to check him over thoroughly. He told her she will have to put compresses on him, because when a dog is grabbed and swung around like that, it throws everything out of alignment. He will also have to wear an elizabethian (sp) collar until the wounds heal.
On the way back from the Vet she went to see if the people with the GSD were home. They were, and the wife and two small children were outside, so my sister told her what happened and the woman was really nice and apologetic. She then called her husband outside and he was not nice!
Of course the first thing he said was their dog has never done that before and that it was my sister's fault for walking by their house ''antagonizing" their dog(s). They have two, but only the one jumped the fence. My sister told him she wasn't even in front of his house, but down a ways and across the street. He then said something about a pack of dogs running loose, and my sister said she knew about them and that the animal control came and picked them up. The man said, "Yeah...when the dogs used to come by here I would open the gate and sic my dogs on them." Nice huh!
She then told him that she has to go down to animal control Tues. and fill out a report about the incident and the man said, "I suggest you don't do that!!!" She told him she has to.
I told her those people are liable for her Vet bills and I hope she pursues it, but she probably won't. My sister is the type that does not want to antagonize anyone or make waves.
The Vet set her up on a 6 mo. payment plan and she insists she will take care of it.

Thanks for the update Loey.
That guy who owns the GSD sounds like a real winner - wonder what color the sky is in his world?
How can you say, without your eyes being totally brown, that a little dog like Max antagonized his GSD so much that the GSD jumped the fence and attacked him - and then in the same breath say, "Yeah...when the dogs used to come by here I would open the gate and sic my dogs on them."...this idiot needs to get his head examined - they'd fine nothing of course!!
I hope he's laying bricks in his pants now cuz she's going to make an official report with the local animal control people. She needs to know she's doing the right thing here by going after them for the vet bills and if she wavers tell her the next victim of that GSD could be a little kid who dares "antagonize" that idiots dog by walking by.
What a load of absolute rubbish.

My feelings exactly, Richard, and you know...in my experience people with out of control aggressive dogs usually share this guys views. There must be a booklet they pass around, because they all sound alike and it makes me absolutely crazy.
I would venture to say that his dog has done this before but no one pressed charges because they are afraid of retaliation from him.
