I had a client call me today to say that she wouldn't be finishing her obedience class. She said that she had already spent hundreds of dollars cleaning and replacing things in her bedroom that had been soiled or destroyed by her dog, mostly because of a lack of house breaking. I reminded her that, as I had said in class, if the dog is able to relieve in the house it's because it wasn't on leash or in its crate, and I told her again how a minimum of effort for the next couple of months would pay off for years to come with a well trained dog.
She said that when I explained during the first class how important it was for the dog to respect the owner and see her as the "boss" she realized that she just didn't want to be anyone's boss, and besides, she had already brought the dog back to the shelter. She said, “I guess I’m just a cat person.”
This was the same lady that kept telling everyone else in the class how "magical" it was that the dog had "chosen" her at the shelter. So hopefully the dog will get a chance to work its magic on someone who is not going to take it back to where it might be killed because they can't be bothered to do some potty training.
And then she had the gall to ask me for her money back. Grrr.

Poor puppy Not really sure the woman even deserves to have a cat.. she'll probably send it back to the shelter the first time it claws a chair.

I suppose that if it only took one dog to convince her she's a cat person, we should take this as a victory, of sorts . . . . Poor cats . . . .

If I've said it once I've said it a dozen times, a pet rock would suit her needs just fine . Poor pup is right . And Kona, check your PM's .

Kona,
You should of just directed her over to the local rock quarry where she could pick out her "magical rock" of a lifetime!!
Funny thing is a cat probably matches her personality perfectly, no responsibility, no need to associate with anyone and definitely no OB....
Wait til she figures out there is a litterbox involved in all of this....hahahahahahahaa

You know Kona no matter how you try some people are just not meant to own a dog much less any animal. Cat maybe but as Richard said when it comes time to clean the kitty pan, YUK I have dealt with many like this and I guess my tolerance level just does not meet yours Now I do an interveiw of sorts with setting up a potential client with a battery of questions to see exactly what I am getting myself into. In the past 2 months I have rejected 3 clients, not because of their dogs NEVER THE DOGS ;D but because of their ignorance to what is involved with owning and training one. Out of those 3 I guess I did some underhanded convincing and that was I told them that their dog would never meet their expectations. Luckily enough I have enough resources to assist them in re homing their pet and getting a poor defenseless canine into a better enviorment where the new owners would take up the challange of providing what is needed. It is sad that some people think that dogs magicly just evolve on their own with no intervention from their owners, but that is why shelters are so over populated. I guess too knowing what I go through trying to raise my own dogs and get them to a level of social acceptance it ticks me off when there are so many people who just do not get it. You really must have the patients of a saint because like I said I have adopted a no tolerance policy ;D and I am sticking to it

Sibemom, in the years that I've been doing this I've gone back and forth between being my own boss and working for someone else. As my own boss I was able to pick and choose my clients. Unfortunately now I work for someone else and thus I do not now have the privilege of saying "No" to a potential client. It's frustrating as hell some days, but I can at least say that I am learning things now that I would not have learned otherwise. I guess that's the best way to look at it for now.
