I can't even tell you how angery I was yesterday. This woman I work with was telling us that her Golden Ret. pup was hit and killed by a car this weekend. Of course I offered my sympathy UNTILL she explained how it happened. She said that the pup had a tendancy to run into the road, and living on a major highway she knew eventually this would happen (*Note to self, if you knew this could happen then why leave the dog loose ). She said this was the third dog in a year that got killed . OK at this point my temper is escalating, and I calmly asked her if she took any precautions to prevent it, you know like tieing it up, kennel etc... She said "Well no, if the dog is to stupid to stay in the yard then so be it" This is when I BLEW. I said "If you have no regard for life be it human or animal, you have no buisness working in a nursing home" YOU ARE THE THE STUPID ONE , and if there was a law for ingnorance you definatly should be arrested " I said "Those dogs were depending on you to keep them safe, and you are nothing more than an animal abuser, Thank God you do not have children. If it was a child that was hit would you have said they were to stupid to stay in the yard. I said "People like you should be tied to a tree, have honey poured on them and hope to god there is an ant hill near by" I know accidents happen but this IDIOT took no precautions. 3 DOGS IN A YEAR I had to walk away because I felt the situation could have escalated to blows. I hope to god she never gets another dog, or babysits for that matter. Dogs are not disposable creatures, they have feelings just like anything else that lives and breaths. People think dogs are stupid, well they should take a look at some of the owners because this is one stiuation that could have been prevented.

The sad thing about cases like this is that there is no excuse for it in this "day and age". There is tons of information out there on any subject you want to learn about, but that's the key. You have to want to learn, and if she has had 3 dogs in a year get killed, I would say she perhaps does not have the capacity to want to or be able to learn! I hope this isn't OT, but since it pertains to the stupidity of people I will relate it. I was going to get out of Rescue because of it taking so much time/energy that I felt I should be devoting to my own dogs...and then a picture of a red/wt male BC that could be Buddy's twin is posted on the list. "Frankie" is 3 yrs. old, un-neutered and was, "dearly loved by his previous family". Yet...he was turned into the shelter. The reason? "Frankie kills chickens". That's it. That's the only reason! Kerra will kill chickens and even cats given half a chance, but I don't turn her into a shelter for that reason! I watch her and have trained her so that if she is around the things she would like to kill, I can control and stop her! Guess who is probably going to be fostering Frankie? ;D ;D ;D I will find out for sure in a few days when he is "sprung" from the shelter and evaluated as to energy level. ;D ;D ;D

I've had situations much like yours, Willow. Dogs being given up for stupid reasons..and sometimes reasons because of their breed. Such as "My husky chases our cats" or "My border collie tries to herd my children" or "My lab is too energetic"....uh...duhhhh... Some things can be trained (such as the border collie herding the children), and other things the owner will just have to deal with and can't change (such as a lab's high energy level..they need to RUN). Of course the worst situation that I absolutely HATE is when I see an older dog being given up because he's not getting along with the new puppy. Sibemom, you have such a huge heart for dogs, and its evident in all your post. Keep it up. People like this are worth ignoring, as they can never be convinced about anything.

A woman I go to school with had her Akita put down because she (the woman, not the dog) was pregnant and it made her sick when the dog pooped.

My only comment would be, this person is not ignorant, but stupid. Ignorance can be cured, it's merely not knowing and there really is no shame in not knowing. Stupid on the other hand, is knowing, but not doing anything about it.

Just let the woman go stand in the middle of the highway (better yet, a busy multi-laned highway) and blindfold her...tell her if she makes it off alive, she can have another puppy....
When it comes to thinning the herd, there is a lot of stupid people who could fit into that category.

A woman I go to school with had her Akita put down because she (the woman, not the dog) was pregnant and it made her sick when the dog pooped. So...who is going to change the baby's poopy diaper's for her? Or is she going to put the baby up for adoption when she has it? I have a very weak stomach and cleaning up after human or animals makes me literally gag, but you have children/animals there are things you have to deal with.

Well I got my butt busy after listening to her saying they were just going to get a MUTT, from the shelter. I called over to the local shelter told them the story so they had a heads up. They said that they would send the info to the surronding shelters so that these people would be on the DO NOT ADOPT TO list. I also called the breeder she got her last Golden from and told her the whole sad story, SHE WAS PISSED and thanked me for the call. I know I butted myself right in there and maybe over stepped my bounds but by God if I can prevent these people from getting another dog at least for awhile that is what I am going to do.

*dances around and does a little jig*....your my role model, sibemom. ;D Seriously, what you did may seem like 'overstepping your boundaries', but your saving a dog's life, and its well worth it in my opinion. I wonder why these people find it in their heads that they even want another dog, considering it'll end up dead anyways.
