Tips for Training Difficult Dogs and Independent Breeds
Betty Fisher and Suzanne Delizo published by Quill/Harper Collins
Ok, I'll admit to buying it 90% for the title alone, but this is a seriously good training book. One of the authors has put obedience titles on Bulldogs, so she does know how to motivate the 'hard to train'. Inspired by the bottom ranks of the Stanley Coren trainability ratings.
The book is big on "whatever works", and uses a mix of positive, training in drive and corrections. All kinds of tips on ways to find out what movitates your dog and practical ways use it in training. It goes beyond the basic and advanced obedience commands. It also covers NILIF "We can't both be Boss" and points out human behaviors that dogs view as sub-dominant. Other chapters cover getting and keeping your dog's attention, and preparing for competition.
The examples used have the ring of real-life to anyone with a difficult dog. The book is comprehensive, well-written, funny in places, and an easy read.

It sounds like a great book. Aussie if it is not too much trouble, can you list for us in the training forum the human behaviors the author says that dogs consider subdominate. I think this is such an important aspect of our relationship with our dog to not do the subtle things that we do that tell the dog that they are boss. It is so confusing to the dog and undermines NILIF. Thanks.
