I have heard about this new " dog Flu" that has been going around but I am not sure what the symptoms are? Both mine were under the weather the other day, nothing serious, and nothing to vet them for, but a girl I work with who is "VET HAPPY" and in this case she should have been was questioning me about some things. Now mine just had the "PUKES" for a day, so we managed that with some rice and broth, then the next day they were fine, no fevers so I was not to concerned. Hers have been vomitting, diareha, she does not know how to take a temp so not sure if they had fevers. I told her she needed to get them in because if they have these symptoms for more than 24 hours then dehydration is a big issue, especailly in small dogs. Well she took them in and her vet said they had this new " dOG FLU" gave them some antibiotics (which I was confused because if it's a virus what were those suppose to do ), told her to put them on a bland diet, and they should be fine. I guess I just do not know enough about it so if anyone has info on the symptoms and cause please post it

Ann, the symptoms mimic kennel cough...nasal discharge, labored breathing, nagging cough and yes it is a virus...a strain of influenza that jumped from horses to dogs. It is very contagious. It is a respiratory infection and cough is a primary symptom. It doesn't sound like the dog flu to me but I am not a vet. www.co.washington.or.us/deptmts/at/dog/news/dog_flu.htmDid your friends vet actually test for dog flu and rule out other things like leptospirosis which has flu like symptoms? Vomiting and diarrhea is very non specific and could be anything. I don't see how he has diagnosed the dog flu though without there being respiratory involvement and then if that is what he thinks it is why on earth would he give an antibiotic for a virus. I wouldn't worry just yet since it sounds like Willow and Brody are doing fine. But if they both are acting sick in any way then i would get it checked out. Has her dog been kenneled recently?

Yes, thanks for the info, Nicki! ;D I didn't know the dog flu was an upper respititory infection, but I do know quite a few dogs here in Wi have died from it. It started at the greyhound tracks, from what I heard, but of course is now spreading to where ever there are groups of dogs and I am with you, Ann...I am not taking mine to the groomer either. Mine have come home with KC a couple of times after taking them to the groomer. Buddy was just sick for a few days too. No vomiting/diarrhea but the most horrible bloating and gas, with the foulest odor I have ever smelled, and I thought it might have been the dog flu, but can see now that it wasn't. I put him on chicken and rice and yogurt with applecider vinegar and garlic, and also gave him a gingerroot capsul once a day, and he immediately began to improve and is now just fine. I even hate to take them to the Vet unless it is a life or death matter, because if they don't have anything serious when they go in, they could come home with something serious!
