What can we give to our puppy for a more shiny coat and to help with itching? My future mother in law said that she was told that you can add a little bit of oil to the dogs food.. Is this ok for the dog? The vet said that we can buy some pills from them of flax seed oil. Could I buy the stuff they sell at a drug store? Thanks

I used to put oil in my dogs food. It's fine. I think most recommend Cod Liver Oil but I've heard Flax Seed is good too.
How often are you bathing and what kind of clensers are you using to bathe with?

we have been using an oatmeal shampoo. We have had him 5 weeks and we bathed him the weekend we got him from the Shelter and then 2 weeks later. I have not bathed him since.
How much Cod Liver Oil should I put in? Thanks again

Well CLO is a good thing to supplement but in the summer Salmon Oil is better then when winter comes use the CLO. I buy the Salmon Oil Caplets from Wal Mart, which are metal free. My GSD Weighs 90#'s and she gets two caps a day, my BC weighs 43#'s and he gets one a day. Same with the CLO. I see your dog is black? One thing that works good for that color coat and helps with the itching is to use a medicated shampoo, my groomer told me that is what she uses on my GSD and when she comes home from there she is BLINDINGLY SHINEY ;D I also use what Brooke suggested a while ago and that is the Herbal Essence conditioner when I shampoo at home. Not only does it help shed out the excess hair but it really shines them up nice, and the SMELL SO GOOD Flax oil can cause allergies in some dogs, and I would watch to to see if this is just seasonal itching. Your dog very well might have some allergies to something. The other thing that does assist in making their coats nice and shiney is to add a raw egg shell and all to their diet about 3 times a week. NO THEY WON'T GET SICK

i bought CLO today and I gave him one. He was curious as to what it was at first and then ate it after spitting it out a few times, I think he will take it normally next time. I will give him one a day since he is a pup. If I give him an egg in the shell what do I do? This sounds stupid but do I break it open and give it to him in a bowl? Do you give it to him whole and he would break it? thanks.

Well since you are using the CLO I would hold off on the egg right now. Because he is a puppy you don't want to overload him with to many things. If you find that the CLO is not working, then the way I give raw eggs is to put them in the blender, then you can pour it over a small amount of his food. I would only mix it with enough food that you know he is going to eat right away. One egg twice a week would be good for him.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will see if the CLO will work. Does anyone know about how long it should take to 'kick in'?

Flax oil can cause allergies in some dogs, and I would watch to to see if this is just seasonal itching. Yeah Ann would know a lot better than I would actually with that. My memory isn't always the best with this kind of stuff

If you do go with eggs, just put a whole egg - intact shell and all in the bowl. Dogs enjoy breaking them open. A shiny coat is an overal indicator that all nutritional needs are being met. It can take weeks for the effect to be seen in the coat. If you're not seeing results in 3 -4 weeks, I'd look at feeding a higher quality diet and not having to add things to it.

When Reign was a puppy and I fed him a not so good food his coat was very dull and coarse and he itched all the time. The vet's answer was to give safflower oil. Of course the vet also sold the not so good food to me. I tried this and it helped some but then I changed to a high quality food (Innova) and his coat gleamed and glistened and was so soft and the itching stopped. So you might want to consider a food change to see if that is the cause versus seasonal allergies.
