I read yesterday that "they" suspect beet pulp, which is added to a lot of kibble's as a "filler", to cause bloat.
I have noted that quite a few kibbles do list "beet pulp" as an ingredient.

Yes I read that too. Beet pulp is used in many foods, even high end ones, as an artificial stool firmer. So you think your dog is having good stools from a food but in reality it is the beet pulp giving a false impresion of good digestion. I won't feed a food with this ingredient. I want to know if my dog is having a problem.

Disgusting! They put grains and other unnecessary stuff in dog food, which makes them poop soft copious amounts, (not to mention the gas) and then instead of taking out what causes this problem, they add something else to mask that problem and which causes more problems. It's like having an illness, going to a Dr. who prescribes a drug, which has numerous side affects, so then he prescribes another drug to mask those side affects, and on and on......

So, here's my thing... I had Zoe on Innova Puppy and Verus Puppy formulas and both just ripped right through her. I was coming close to feeding her almost all white rice with some dry kibble because she just could not have firm stool. It was never diarrhea, but it was always drizzly at the end. And she kind of... smelled. My mother can smell a flea fart a mile away and she was constantly complaining. I have her on Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb & Rice (almost 1 1/2 months) and she's passing smaller stools, in smaller quantities than before. And she just smells like a dog, not... weird. I know the EP Holistic Lamb & Rice is marked as an adult formula, but my pet store (independent, owned by a couple who owns a rescue) suggested it to me as a way to cut down on the ingredients to figure out what was causing her such digestive stress. But they have beet pulp but it's one of the few undesireables in the recipe. I want to have her on the healthiest diet possible, but when on Innova her body just goes into overdrive and I hate watching her struggle to pass her poop. The EP seems like a good compromise, but I do not like the ingredients in their puppy specific formula. Meh. Now I'm all confuzzled.

Icygirl, I had the same problem and went though many foods before finding one that agreed with my dog. I feed California Natural and canned natural balance duck and potato and some raw patties and recreational bones and some cooked meat. Finally we have log poops. I am not saying to do this and I know that people rave about Eagle..about the quality of meat they use...evidently it is good and the food has a high meat percentage as well so I don't know what to tell you. If the beet pulp is way down on the list of ingredients..it may be a negligible amount. But if it is at the very beginning, I personally would not give it.

I did do a search on this...wow what a contentious subject. Some swear it is harmless - some swear it is deadly. Those who say it is harmless think that it is necessary to "move the food through"... well I want to know WTF is IN that food if it can't move through without beet pulp? Makes me glad I feed raw and know exactly what is in my dogs food. I don't trust anybody to feed my dog but me.

The beet pulp is fourth on the list for the Holistic Lamb & Rice but I'm going to wait until I find out more because she's eating the food and not having digestive problems anymore. Her health is great and I don't want to mess with it, she's gone through four kibbles in about six months.
