Is it ok to give small amounts of apples, carrots, bananas, lettuce, pears to dogs for snacks? I've been reading all the things that are toxic to dogs and I'm afraid to give her anything other than dog food yet I would like her to have some things that are not high in protein. Thanks!

Yes it is fine to give those fruits for snacks, but make sure that the seeds are out of the apple. Grapes are bad so don't give those. Brooke posted a section on all things toxic to dogs take a look

Do not under any circumstances give rasins and stay away from grapes. Lots of people give grapes but they are hard on the kidneys among other things and can cause death in a decent portion. A couple is sufficent. Rasins are extremely leathal. It doesn't take much of them to cause organ failure and/or death.
Other fruits are ok to a small extent but they don't sit well in their stomachs if they eat too much. I would probably not feed regularly but once and awhile is ok in very small amounts. Their insides don't withstand and digest acidic fruits as well as humans do. Their body makeup is a little different. It can cause many gastro-intestinal problems if they eat too much.
Make sure the fruits are deseeded, destemed and pitted. Stems, seeds and pits contain cyanide.

For sure, go easy on the fruit, they don't really need it if they're getting a balanced diet. And it also gives a lot of dogs the trots, if ya know what I mean .

Actually, protein is good for your dog. Dogs need a lot of protein. It is not meat protein that is bad for your dog, and even fat is only harmful in large amounts. Protein is much better than veg's, fruits, grains, which a dogs system can neither absorb nor utilize.
For snacks I give small pieces of cooked meats and cheese. I also give some fruits/veg's, but only as an occassional treat if they like them and will eat them.
