Before you have to throw it away??
I am having a serious issue with my fridge.. Long story short my old one was leaking. Landlady replaced it with one that doesn't work period. All my frozen meat defrosted including about 20lbs of Myahs pork necks and various other foods.
I am chucking anything fowl related... I know I can't refreeze the pork but how long can I keep it on ice in a cooler?? The lady doesn't believe me about the fridge so this could take a bit before I just get aggrivated enough and go out and buy my own.
She is normally a very nice lady... She just thinks I am a complete village idiot. I am so upset at the moment so I am off for and clean my house. Feel free to IM me if you like.. NottaCluTN on AIM.

As long as the meat is kept cold it should be o.k. for a day or two, and then can be re-frozen. I do this all the time for both the dogs food and ours, because sometimes I will thaw something and there is too much for one or two meals (cuz I was too lazy to put it in meal size pkgs.) and have never had a problem, even if it was thawed and kept in the fridge for a day or two before re-freezing. A lot of times I will buy meat in the store that has been frozen and now is partially thawed and I will take it home and re-freeze it. No problem.

I wouldn't throw the fowl away either - I would just keep it on ice and refreeze like Loey said... If you have any doubts - mark it for the dog. My understanding is - that dogs can eat meat that is a little bit "off".

Well I am glad I asked then... I would never have refrozen it. I had always thought that was a really bad thing. Then thats what I will do then.. Throw it in a cooler for now and just refreeze it when this mess is over. I think I will still prepare the people food though. Thankfully it happened now and not after a I had picked up our stuff for the next few weeks. So I don't have that much stuff for us in there. Just some fish and ground beef.
Thanks a lot!! Maybe my headache will go away now. ;D

Most meats that you buy in the store especially chicken have already been frozen once. When the meat department packages them it gets thawed and put out in the meat case so as long as the internal temp on the meat especially poultry is kept at 40 or below you are fine. If you can't re-freeze the meat I still would rinse it off before feeding it to your dog. zKeeping it on ice is not a bad idea either like Amy said.

I wonder where that came from... I was always taught by my mother to never refreeze food once you took it from your freezer and let it thaw out.
The fridge quit working all together.. So I not only had a whole mess of stuff from my freezer go bad... but I had to chuck alot of stuff from the fridge part to. I just couldn't save it all. I am not very happy and I probably won't have a fridge until Tues or Wed.

Sorry to hear that. We have had that happen a time or two and it just makes a person ill thinking of all that $$$$ down the drain.

I wonder where that came from... I was always taught by my mother to never refreeze food once you took it from your freezer and let it thaw out. You are not crazy. This is true. But not necessarily for safety reasons, it is for quality. Food that has completely thawed and is refrozen loses almost all of it’s nutritional value. Food that thaws but still has ice crystals can be refrozen and it usually maintains most of it’s nutrients. Food that has completely thawed for longer than a day should be discarded for safety. Food that has thawed and reached a temp above 40 degrees should also be discarded for safety. Refrozen food should be used ASAP..within a month. I actually looked this up because my mother always told me the same thing and since I am a bacteria freak when you posted I was interested in why. Every article says the same thing.

Thanks a ton Nicole... You just saved me a ton of research I haven't been able to find the time to do. LOL I have been crazy busy this week for some reason... Its starting to wear me out. I hadn't been sure so I just threw it away... I am kicking myself in the butt for not just putting everything in a cooler right as soon as I suspected the freezer wasn't working. Thas what I get for listening to the hubby instead of my own common sense. I too have never had a fridge take a day or two to refreeze all the food. Hubby has been single for most of his 39 years and lived with his parents or buddies so he never had to deal with all this stuff.
