They came out of nowhere... We have never had a problem with fleas before. Well we do now and I am not sure what to do. I thought initially of handling it naturally but now I think I am just going to get a treatment like Advantage.
Now how do I treat my house because the kids are getting bit. Its not really bad yet... but I know if I don't check this and fast it will become a huge issue.
Thanks...

Well - in the past I have used Frontline from the vet. I find it lasts a lot longer than they say it does and I usually use just one dose a year. I was hoping to get away from it this year - but having fleas in my house once was one too many times. So I have to think hard about this...

Argh, fleas! Every once in a blue moon I will find a flea in my house. My suggestions, get Frontline Plus or something of the sort, even if it is just temporarily. Do not use a cheapie product like Hartz or whatever its called. Also, vacuum like your life depends on it. The rare instances that I find a flea, I will vacuum the entire place once a day for 3 or 4 days. Once is not enough, those little buggers jump around like crazy. Good luck! I have heard of people using flea bombs/defoggers but I have never used one of those.

I have found EXCELLENT results with K9 Advantix which you can get from your vet without prescription or even online. You can't find it in stores. You just apply it to the back of the neck. Make sure it's applied directly on the skin and I even go straight down the spine if I need to but not far enough where they can lick it off. Also make sure you do not bathe or give her a chance to get stuck outside on a rainy day for at least 10 days. (I've acidentally done that...left to go to the store and I come out and it's raining ...that sucks....) It completely defeats the purpous of the application if they get wet. It dilutes it before it fully absorbs and is hardly effective if at all. Make sure you sweep well. You can bomb or find household sprays. Also...buy a cheapy flea collar and be sure to throw it in your vaccum bag to kill off any fleas that may infest it.

I swumg by the vets office and picked up some Frontline after I posted this yesterday.
What I am most concered about now though is getting my house taken care of. I was going to pick up some stuff at the vets... Begins with an M?? You just spray it all over the house?? ugg I will come to me later. Anyway... I was looking at the label and it says remove fish from home for 3 hours..... I have 150 gallons in fish tanks... There is NO WAY. I can't seal the tanks and I won't take the chance of killing my fish.
I will try vaccuming for now... I read somewhere about using Borax on the carpets... Kills the fleas and kills thier eggs when they hatch?? I dunno I am at a loss. I will have to do more research. Thanks for the help...

IMHO do not use any sprays or bombs inside for fleas. I did this several years ago and got very sick from the toxic chemicals. Will never recover. I wish I could tell you a natural remedy but have not found one that works. I have taken all carpet out of house. LOL!

I must say I have no answer to this because I have been lucky we have never had fleas with or without the topical repellent. I will do some searching because I know there is something in a natural way to get rid of them from your house. The dog is your decision. I just do not care for chemicals in or on mine.

You know - we always lived in rentals with small or no yard and never had a problem with fleas. Then when we moved to our house we were flea infested within a month or two and that is when I started the frontline (about 6 years ago)...I just thought it was because they were spending more time outside...maybe I will try without the frontline and see now that they are on a more natural diet- I have very little carpet left in the house anyway

So far so good... We used the frontline plus like I mentioned and I just vaccumed the heck out of my house. My two little kids aren't getting bit.. Only my oldest is still complaining about it. I haven't seen one in a couple of days and I haven't gotten bit either. So I dunno whats up with my son.
Thankfully there isn't a lot of carpet here and the house is rather small. Dave found a whole where we think stray cats might be getting into the crawlspace. We are on a concrete slab so no basement. I am going to call the humane soiciety and see about borrowing a trap or two and see if I can catch them before i have a million cats running around the property.
Amyjo... we also have a huge yard. We constantly get deer and rabbits. Though with the dog we aren't seeing them close to the house anymore. Even the rabbits keep to the upper part of the field.
