I was wondering if anyone here feeds their dog any type of fruits and, if so, what kind. Is there a detriment to giving any type of fruit (other than grapes which can cause kidney failure.)
Also, how about yogurt assuming that the dog is not allergic.

My dogs like apples in their mush and I usually add a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt when I have it.

What most long time raw feeder's say is this:
It's not necessary, or even advisable to feed a lot of fruits and veg's, but if your dog likes them, it's o.k. to give them as treats. What they don't recommend doing is giving whole meals that contain a lot of veggies/fruits, because, like grains, dogs don't digest them, and they largly pass out undigested, meaning your dog is not getting any food value from them. Therefore, by feeding fruit/veg's meals in place of whole RMB's, your dog is missing out on needed nutrients.
As far as dairy products, they say the same thing and I sometimes give my dogs a spoon of cottage cheese or yogurt, or small pieces of cheese, but as a treat only, just because they like it. I also give my dogs a spoon of ice cream if I'm eating it...which isn't often, but just because they love it. The same with popcorn. My dogs, esp. Kerra loves it, so when I have it I share with them.
I personally don't feel a little of most things will kill them, you just don't want to over do it.

Hey, in the sticky I left up in this section, compiled a list of fruits and veggies that you shouldn't feed to much of. It lists the side effects and what kind of damage it can do....

Hey Brooke that's a great resource. Thanks. I just read it and now know why Reign had the runs every time I gave him Broccoli. Amyjo, apples are on the list of no-no's.

This is what the article says: Apple, Almond, Apricot, Peach, Wild Cherries, Plum, Balsam Pear, Prunes and similar fruit: Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, (stems, seeds and leaves). The seeds of most fruits contain cyanide, which is poisonous to dogs as well as humans. I would read it as just the stems seeds and leaves of these fruits. I didn't catch that distinction when I first read it. The seeds have cyanide.

I occasionally give Kacy apple (cores), but I'll start popping out the seeds . She loves carrots, but they obviously just, um, pass on thru. Orange spots in the backyard. I love to watch her eat them, though. Its hysterical

I think its mostly the seeds stems and leaves that are the worst part. As for the fruit if you give them a little it won't hurt much but I don't think their gastro intestinal system handles the acidic fruits as well as humans do. Which is why they can get diarrhea and stomach cramps ect...then again humans can too if they eat too much but I think dogs are a little more sensitive. I know you are right about the cyanide. I found the majority of this information awhile back on I think the ASPCA's website. So I know its legit. It took me forever to put that whole thing together though...
