Well I did for a couple of days but then Loey told me she just took hers off cold turkey. So then I stopped with kibble. I think it's better not to mix the kibble and the raw. They might go through a munchie stage at first where they seem like they are still hungry but that soon passes. You dont want to confuse of upset their stomachs that is why you start with one protein source and then work your way up. I still give Blade some healthy cooked foods like tonight I had some chicken soup with veggies etc... and I pureed it up with his veggie mush. When I have some really good table scraps like Beef Roast I do give it to him but NO COOKED BONES. Give it try I think you will be pleased with the results.

Amyjo, that's great that you are going to do this. Let me know how it goes because I think I am right behind you.

I'm actually in the same boat.... I've been talking about it with my husband. He's not opposed to it at all. He's just like "if your going to do it, thats all you. You can deal with it" Don't you just love....yeah...I won't say it.

Well - his first argument was expense - I laid that to rest with my Aldi'd receipt today... Now he just thinks it will be gross and wants no part in it. He also thinks we are all a bunch of crack heads and kibble is fine.
It doesn't really matter - I feed them most of the time any way so it is pretty much "all me"....

Well - my critters are outside with thier first chicken quarters right now.
They acted so strange - like "what am I supposed to do with this?"
They are nibbling politely - each on one side of the yard - Not at all the flesh ripping free for all I imagined ;D
I keep checking on them because I am nervous - and they look at me all guilty like they are doing something wrong... it is so funny!

That is so funny but to be expected. They were probably looking at you saying "Hey? Is this for real ? Do we really get to eat this?" I am sure they are very happy with you. Some dogs take time to adjust but when they get hungry they will eat don't worry. It's good they are taking their time. Keep up the good work ;D

You'll probably find that they can cope better with some kinds of bones than others. For example, Sailor does great with drumsticks and breaks them into managable chunks before eating, but boofhead Finn tries to swallow them whole; (actually it's the keeping them down whole that's the problem.)
So as a result, he gets necks and wings, but no drumsticks or breastbones.
You'll figure it out as you go along, and I know exactly what you mean about them thinking this is a set up.

That's great. Maybe you should start a new thread "Amyjo's Raw feeding Log" so that us chickens can follow your progress. ;D

I have yams, romain and apples all on the brink. Making two batches one with canned Mackrel and one with ground turkey - we shall see!

Hey, Amyjo!! Great news!!! When I started my dogs out on raw, I started out *cold turkey* as Sibemom said, and I also gave them a variety right away. My Aussie did not like the chicken at first, but now she eats her drumstick so fast, I thought Pup was stealing it from her, but he wasn't!!! ;D Be forwarned that too many veggies/fruit can cause diarrhea. The quantities in the formula for veggie mush I posted is about right and shouldn't cause any problem, but if it does, back off on the veggies/fruit. I don't feed my dogs much veggies/fruits at all anymore. It's not essential, but sometimes when they start out eating the bones, esp. if you feed a lot of necks/wings because they are more bone than meat, they can have very hard stools and a little veggie/fruit helps things move along better. My dogs both weigh about 50#, which is probably 5# too much and I'm working on that. They each get a cup of their ground meal, and for the RMB's meal I give Pup the thigh and Kerra the drumstick. Depending on the size of the beef necks, they usually each only get one, but they are older and get moderate exercise...which is about 45 min. to 1 hr. of off leash walking/running every day. Another way you will find out if you are feeding too much at a meal is that they may throw up!! At least mine do!! For treats I give cooked chicken or other meat, cheese, raw veggies/fruits if they will eat them, and I have been known to give them some of what I am eating....Hey! They're spoiled, o.k. ;D ;D Oh, the reason you don't want to mix kibble with the raw is that the kibble digests more slowly and they can get stomach/bowel upsets. If you must feed kibble, feed it alone. I have been known to feed kibble in an emergency, but by the next day I notice a bad body odor on them already!!
