Hi everyone My friend from my sheltie group suggested that I incorporate mental as well as physical exercise so Magic and I went for a free lance heel walk this afternoon. She responded so well I couldn't have been more proud. Through all the twists and turns she stayed right with me and when I stopped she sat like a perfectly trained little girl. We weaved, we stopped, we turned circles in both directions and she never wavered her attention at all. We passed bicycles and golf carts going in the other direction (more of her triggers) and she sat perfectly still and watched them go by. By the time we had been out for 15 minutes she was a really tired little girl. Her need to pay attention and keeping up with me really wore her out. So I'm going to do this again and again and along with her obed training to sharpen her skills even more. Right now she's flat out on the floor sleeping and we've been home for only ten minutes!

That is why obedience training is so important along with physical exercise. To be a well adjusted dog, they need both physical and mental "exercise" to tire out their minds and bodies. ;D
Have you ever thought about going into the " doggie dance" thing with her? Shelties, BC's and Aussie's are sooo good at that and they seem to really love it!

Yep, you've hit upon a dog training secret. Anything that engages the mind is heaps more tiring for the dog than engaging just the body.
It's great that you put so much effort into her. She's really come a long way.

We just tried a new game here. Had so much fun watching her we were almost late for an appointment! I placed three small cat treats on the floor in front of her (she's in a sit stay) and placed a bowl over the top of the treats and then released her to get her treats. Took her a good five minutes to get all three treats out from under that bowl. What a hoot!!
