Shasta, my newly aquired girl has a rather disturbing issue with being very possessive over chew bones/rawhides, etc. She's somewhat possessive of her food, but not too bad and she isn't possessive of toys at all...just chewys. Seeing as how I have small children in the house, this is not a good thing. I would really like to correct her behavior but I don't know how to go about it. Any ideas, suggestions, etc. that you all have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the board. Bones, dogs and kids are a disaster waiting to happen. If it were me I would remove the bones from the equation. don't let the dog have a bone in the presence of the children unless you are supervising and you make the kids stay away from him. Or let the dog eat it where he will not be approached or bothered. I say this because no matter how much you condition and train the dog to not aggress when a child grabs the bone , You can NEVER trust that he won't react. The simple and safe solution is to just seperate the dog from the kids during bone time. It isn't worth the risk IMO

I agree with Nicole.
Before the introduction of Cookie to this household, Stuie had no problem with bones. She'd let us hold it, or play with it, anything. Since Cookie came on board tho, her behavior took a 180. Stuie is now very protective of bones - won't even work on it, just hoards it, and growls (or even snaps) at anyone who comes near her if she has one. I had tried all kinds of things - giving both dogs one, separating them, etc. But in the end, the best thing for me to do was ban bones from the house.
