Hi folks, haven't been active for a long while.. i now have a 9lb, lhasa/poodle mix puppy, male, neutered already and he's 4months old. i am doing crate training just like i did with Ringo (german shepherd) and i remember reading or learning the thing about how many hrs a puppy can be in a crate depending on the age..like for x amt of months-it'll be half hour or one hour more in crate. it's been so long since ringo and i am having a senior moment can someone pls refresh my memory? thanks, marsha

If "I" remember correctly it is 1 hr. for each month old, plus one hour....so for your puppy it would be 5 hours. However, I always thought that equation was un-realistic for daytime hours, even for a mature dog...(who is such an "expert" that they can determine to the hour how long a puppy/dog can "hold it" ? ) When first crate training and especially a small breed, I would make sure bladder/bowels are empty when put into the crate and then not expect them to be in the crate for more than 2 hours max. Remember, puppies/dogs are active during the day and being in a crate for long periods of time IMO can lead to behavioral problems.

thanks ! i am not working at this time, so i am able to housetrain him..hopefully the right way. sometimes though, i have to go out in the morning for about 4 hrs..and Tobi has been behaving and not having accidents in his crate. so far so good..hopefully, i will slowly 'wean' him out of the crate and just confine him in the kitchen when i go back to work in a few months. i just have to make arrangements for his midday potty break by then. thanks again!! marsha
