I have never in my life had such a stubborn un-trainable dog!!!!! Sorry for the little vent. I know this is a people problem and not a dog problem but it is still frustrating
So here is the people problem. The first couple of days after we brought Duncan home if was very skittish so admittedly we let him get away with alot. (ie getting on the couch, didn't start NILF right away, and didn't start right away with basic Ob) So now I am paying the price and have a little terror on my hands. So here are my issues.
1) Constantly on the sofa and bed. If I tell him off (and make him) he will immeadiatly jump back on. After about the 4th time in a row he will stay off but after that I can't get him to come up on command. My guess is I will have to do several drills of "up and off" and then he may get it. I have been trying to teach my example (having Lucy jump on and off) but that is not working either. He is never growley or anything about it just so freaking stubborn.
2) Getting him to sit. I have also been able to lead dogs in to a sit with a food lure for the first few times till they get the idea. This is not working with him because he will just back up or turn around. Tried guiding back with a leash with no luck and again with the learn by example with no success. I have been watching and trying to give the command when he does it on his own but I don't think I am catching him at the right time or often enough for him to get it. So since I can't even get this basic command implementing NILF is proving difficult.
3) Walking nicely on a leash. When we first brought him home if did great on the leash and would stay right around me (or hubby if he was walking). He has now started pulling and I dont know how to stop it. I will eventually go the way of the prong if necessary but it is too early for that yet. At the moment we rarely go on walks because it is way too cold and snowy (still) so we usually just have 20 minutes jaunts in the back yard. I think we have been on one since we got him and I think that one was too long (about an hour not sure of the distance) because by the end he was whinning.
4) Crate training - Since we got Duncan either Brian or I has been home most of the time so he has not spent much time in the crate. He started out in the crate at night but hubby has now started letting him sleep in the bed (he does good with this, sleeps thru the night and does not get off the bed until one of us gets up.) So now the only time he spends in the crate is if we go out and he doesn't pee/poop and if we have to leave the house. When we leave he will whine and whine and according to the neighbors never stops. It is usually like 2 hours between when my hubby leaves for work and I get home from school only 2 days a week. Even giving him a RMB or filled kong does no good. He is not distructive, never wets or messes in his crate only whines like someone is killing him. If he knows someone is in the house he is content in the crate and will sleep or chew on toys. I have tried turning on radio or TV but that doesn't help either.
Any ideas on how to get myself out of this hole I have dug would be much appreciated.
