We are looking at wet weather exercise options for the shelter dogs. One person has suggested a treadmill. Does anyone have experience using these for exercise? How to you teach the dogs to stay on the machine?

I treadmill trained my corgi. She's my running partner, but with the winters we'd get in Chicago there was no way I was running out there, plus I wouldn't want to expose her little paws to the cold, icy, salty sidewalks.
But she needs to have her exercise or she'll start peeing in the house. So I got on the treadmill with her next to me and wrapped the leash around the handlebar. We walked at a moderate pace and as she became more comfortable I stepped one foot on the floor and the other I kept on the treadmill so Cori didn't freak out. I would gradually increase the pace and I eventually took my foot off the treadmill.
It took a few sessions of me having to stand right next to her while she ran. But eventually, I'd have her running on the treadmill and I would use the elliptical next to her. We always worked out together.
