Last night my dog Jetta killed a skunk. Jetta is good with cats and she was really good with my daughter when she was a baby. I always knew Jetta had a high pray drive because she is part beagle. She once got a hold of a cat that she didn’t know. All she did was sniff the poor cat. Well one of my friends says that once a dog kills a small animal, the dog thinks it’s ok to kill everything that is small. Is that true? I can’t imagine that Jetta would suddenly become a cat killer. My sister has dogs who kill rabbits all the time, and they never hurt her cats.

Don't beat yourself up or blame Jetta. Most dogs have it in them to kill small prey animals if the right circumstances occur. It's instinct. The ancient spirit of the wolf runs through all dogs to some degree.
Even soft gentle Sailor once killed a chicken when presented with the chance. She was a dog that loved everything and never even tore up a toy.
These is no truth to the rumor that one type of aggression migrates to another.
Overall, if she has high prey drive, she will want to chase prey type creatures. And her reaction once she catches them depends on the amount of fight drive in her. If she is high drive, you probably already have training and management strategies in place.
If normally she is not a high prey drive dog, it was just a chance occurrence of opportunity. A blip in an otherwise peaceful life.
Be on the lookout for any other behavioral changes and react accordingly, but don't be afraid that she is turning into a blood thirsty monster!

Dogs, and any domestic animal has a tendency to react like that because of their natural wild instinct.. Our dachshund loves to dig and bark at squirrels, just last week he caught a small rat..

I think it is cool to see dogs do what they were originally bred for. Most dachshunds today are pampered house pets, with bling and wardrobes. A far cry from the brave ratters, sent underground to rid the property of vermin.

Isn't it dangerous to kill a skunk? The dog may eat the smelly liquid that skunks spray. I have been squirted in the shoe before and the smell is something I will remember for the rest of my life! LOL!
