Well, my name is Amber, I have a husband and daughter, 3 dogs (Lucky and Sammi, Shepherd/Collie mix brother and sister, and Little Man, a Shih-Tzu), 2 cats (Gizmo and Sasha) and 2 fish (Freddy Betta and Roger the Pleco). I have two part time jobs, one for an inventory company, and the other job I demo Nutro pet food, which lets me go into a lot of pet stores and talk to a lot of pet owners, and pet a lot of dogs! Most fun job I've ever had. Hubby is a truck driver, and DD is 3 and makes a full-time job of driving me crazy! All of my furry critters are rescues of some sort. I got Lucky and Sammi when thier owner (my mom's fiance) died and his family was going to send them to the pound (our county pound is BAD, they make no attempt to adopt out the animals and almost all of them die). They were almost a year old, lived outside thier whole lives, and weren't housetrained! That was an adventure, the last puppy I had was when I still lived at home and my mom housetrained it! It took about 6 mos, but they are pretty good about it now. Then 2 mos ago I went outside to start my car in the morning, and there was a shaggy little Shih-Tzu in my driveway. He didn't have a collar or anything, so I put an extra one I had around the house on him and chained him in my backyard so he wouldn't get hit by a car, since I was running late for work and didn't have time to set him up with something in the house. Gave him some food and water to hold him over. Got home and started making phone calls, started watching the paper. Nothing. Put signs up around town, NOTHING. A couple weeks ago I discovered he had a micro chip that had seriously migrated (a few inches) and it came back as not being registered. Vet tried to contact the people who bought the chip and NOTHING. So the micro chip company said I could register it in my name. He's now had his shots, been neutered, and had THREE retained baby teeth pulled. In pulling the teeth the vet discovered that he had a couple month old broken jaw that was never treated. He also had a horrific hot spot on his back when I found him which went away easily with a little bit of CARE! This poor guy had one heck of a couple years (microchip company said the chip was shipped in Dec 2002), but nobody is going to kick him again, I can promise that! He's also not housebroken and has ery few manners! He didn't know how to play with a ball when I found him, and didn't seem to know what I meant when I said "Good boy!" He knows it now though, and wags his tail! So we've got a lot of issues to work with on him, but I'm sure we'll get him soon! And my cats, they are both rescues too. Gizmo was dumped at the horse barn, vet figures she was about 5 weeks old. We've had her almost 4 years now. And Sasha just showed up at my mom's place, and Mom didn't really want a female cat around, so I took her! I've never said "Hmm, I think I'd like to have a dog..." because they always just show up somehow!
Freddy Betta and Roger share a 10 gallon fish tank in the living room. I guess you could say Freddy was a rescue, we got him from Wal Mart!

Hi I am Jade, my family and I have recently been adopted by a 5 month old female Yorkie named Maggie may, or Waggie May for short.. I would love to teach Maggie things like how to sit & stay & , but I don't know where to begin. I have been working on bite inhibition and that certain things are mine & she must leave them alone. She is very smart and loves to learn, but I am really lacking in this area & just don't know where to start, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Iwill try and attach a pic of Maggie. Big welcome for all the brave new posters. Jade, good on you for wanting to train your dog. Two good books for beginning trainers are "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend" by The Monks of New Skeet and " dog Training for Dummies" by J & W Vollard. Or check out a basic obedience class in your area. Maggie is cute as chips and I love to see little dogs who are well trained.
