>:(I went in for Magic's annual heartworm test and asked him to do a draw for a thyroid check and to send it to Michigan State Vet Lab. He said why? She has a good coat and her skin looks fine why do you want to waste your money on a blood test that will show she's fine? I said that she has gained too much weight in too short a time and I think it's possible she's hypothyroid. He asked me what I was feeding her and I told him home cooked chicken vegetables fruits and eggs. He said well that's your problem she should be eating dog food not human food He suggested I put her on Hill's Science Diet lean for over weight dogs. I reminded him she has allergies (he's been her vet since I've had her) Oh uh, he then decided that Hills Science Diet allergy formula would work for her. I told him I'd rather feed her bird poop . He did the draw for the thyroid and sent it in and guess what she is hypothyroid and is on meds now. I will let him draw her in one month as a check for thyroid levels then I'm outa his office for good. I've found another vet close to home that is willing to work with me with Magic's wholesome diet and her thyroid meds. I know vets get royalites for selling that food, but come on, it's my dog's health here not his pocketbook.

I have had pets for many years and have seen the change in the way we feed them.
Our pets were basically fed table scraps and one of the kibbles on the market then. Kibbles that people would gasp in horror at today because of their ingredients. My favorite was "Cycle". It was considered a "premium" food at that time, and more expensive then most foods, but wasn't the most popular, which was Purina. I tried feeding that, because it was supposed to be the best, but my dogs always got dull coats and flaky skin on it.
One of my healthiest dogs was fed a cheap generic brand and table scraps.
Not one of my dogs ever became diabetic or had the other illnesses dogs have today and I can't ever remember taking any of our pets to the vet unless it was for vaccinations, or altering. I recall the first male dog of mine I had altered. Even the vet said he would become less active and "sluggish".
The only difference I ever saw in any of my neutered males was that they were no longer interested in female dogs. ;D
I still think our dogs started to become more unhealthy as we began pumping them full of all the drugs and chemicals that VETS and dog food manufacturer's say they need to stay healthy, and when more un-necessary ingredients began to be added to commercial dog food.
I also feel some raw feeders give their dogs too many fruits, veg's and supplements, which can cause imbalances and allergies. When I quit doing that, my dogs allergies went away!
The "smarter" we humans become, the more we and our animals suffer.

Judy - I agree with you about the vet....kudos to you for being educated and knowing what your dog needs and getting it for her.
I would just second what Loey said about the fruits and veggies. Your dog cannot process them unless you break down the cellulous by grinding them - therefore you can safely eliminate them from her diet and you should if she has allergies. I would add some fish body oil (2-3 caps per day) and some liver (about 2% of her diet). I know ya didn't ask but I got a big nose when it comes to doggie diets.
