The Other End of the Leash Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs Patricia B McConnell
I think that if every person read this book before getting their first dog, there would be a lot fewer dog bites.
Putting most ideas into species behavior, the book explains how primates (humans) act and move contrasted with how Canids (dogs) act and move. Why hugging is a natural primate action, and why dogs instinctively hate it. Why humans are compelled to yell "Be Quiet" at a barking dog, and why that never works. How to use your behavior to ellicit the house friendly manners you want from your dog.
More about behavior than training; and everything about understanding. An easy, fascinating read that is highly recommended.

This one is my favorite book so far out of all of the books I have read. It is written in everyday language so the average person can understand it. She makes sense, and you are able to put down the book, go out to the yard, and put it into practice very easily.

I was very impressed by this book. The author speaks to the everyday person and the everyday person's situations, making all of her points attainable and clear. I learned a lot from it, and at $10 from Amazon, it's worth every penny.
