FEEDING RAW
Approximately 2/3 of the diet is raw meaty bones(rmb’s). The remaining 1/3 is composed of “veggie mush”, (which also contains ground meat/poultry),offal (liver, heart, gizzards) 3 times week, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt.
Feeding 2 meals a day, there are 14 meals in one week, so 1/3 would be 4-5 meals, 2/3rds 9-10 meals. I feed an equal volume at each meal. For starter, take your dog’s weight and multiple by 2%. A 50lb dog would get about 1lb. Of food a day. That’s a starting point. More active dogs will require more, sedentary dogs less.
With all that in mind, I feed rmb’s every evening. That’s 7 meals per week. Of the remaining 7 meals, I want 4 or 5 of them to be veggie mush, so I basically feed veggie mush in the mornings for 2 days, then 1 day of rmb’s, then 2 days of veggie mush, 1 day of rmb’s and so on.
RMB’s can be any of the following:
Chicken necks, wings, backs, hindquarters
Beef necks, ribs
Pork necks
Lamb necks
Turkey necks, wings
Canned mackerel or salmon which is the only exception to the no cooked, because raw has a dangerous bacteria or parasite…(I forget which).
VEGGIE MUSH: (Added to 2# of ground meat/turkey)
Take a variety of veggies. You can use any of the following:
Lettuce, spinach, parsley, cabbage, broccoli, green/yellow beans, aspergrass zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, endive, cauliflower, summer squash, celery, apples, bananas, oranges, melons, berries. Don’t use iceberg as it has almost no nutritional value. You can use other veggies too, but be careful not to use a lot of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower as they can cause gas. Avoid onions. They cause anemia in dogs.
For 2 lbs of ground meat, put 3 or 4 things in your food processor (or juicer if you have one). Chop everything up fine. Then put 2 eggs with shells into the mixture, and mix to a consistency of applesauce. You should have about 2 to 4 cups of “veggie shake”. Mix with the ground meat. I buy the ground turkey from Aldi’s for $.49 cents a lb. You have to use the egg shells to balance the calcium/phosphorus ratio. Mix it up and add your supplements, or add the supplements before feeding.
I add chicken livers, hearts and/or gizzards 3 times a week, but don’t feed these in large amounts as they are very rich and can cause stomach upset.
I also give big beef knuckle bones 2-3 times a week, just for chewing. Not counted as a meal. These should be raw also. Do not feed the “basted/baked” etc., as they are cooked and also have carcinogens in them from the flavorings added.
About once a week I add a heaping tablesthingy of yogurt or cottage cheese to their veggie mush.
I do not feed grains. They are not necessary and are one of the reasons dogs have allergies and gain weight on kibble. It’s loaded with grains.

Sat AM: veggie mush
Sat PM: rmb’s
Note: the next week, Sun AM would be vm, but since it’s the 2nd day in a row of vm, Mon AM would be rmb’s and so on.
There is no “one right way” to feed raw. If you vary the diet by using different protein sources as much as possible and use different veggies each time you make a new batch of vm, you’ll cover all your bases as far as nutrition goes. Everyone does it a little differently and all with equal degrees of success, so don’t feel things are not “perfect.” Each dog is different and what works for one, may not work for another.
