We recently had a couple posts about Cesar's program on t.v., and I stated that although I don't agree with him 100%, I do feel he is the best t.v. dog "rehabilitator".
The regulars here also know I am not against using a pinch collar for large out of control dogs.
However: I also own and love the Australian Shepherd breed, and the ones familar with them know they usually weigh between 40-50#, give or take a few #'s for sex etc., so last night when I saw a couple who owned a gorgeous red/white female Aussie who had never been properly socialized with other dogs bring her outside with this humongous pinch collar on her, I have to say....I was pretty upset!!!
I also know that Cesar says he likes to use the collar the people usually use on their dogs, but I have seen him put a different collar on a dog before he works with it, and I was very unhappy with him when he did not put a different collar on this poor dog.
She would get very excited and whine/yelp/jump around when she saw another dog, but she was not what I would call "uncontrollable" like say, a large Lab, GSD or Rottie and the like would be, and was not the least bit aggressive towards other dogs or people, which amazed me, because using a pinch collar in the wrong way can cause misplaced aggression.
I watched her closely and also wondered if some of the yipping/yelping wasn't from being hurt by the collar and knowing what was coming when they would meet another dog?
At the end of the program I did not see where the people had learned all that much either. The young woman just held her tighter/closer by her side.
Did any one else see this and what were your thoughts when you did?
loey
p.s. I want that Aussie.
