I see some new posters but no new introductions. Please tell us a little about yourselves. What pets do you have, what experience do you have, where do you live, what do you enjoy.

Does this include me? ;D I'm pet-less at the moment, having just recently trained and releasing a service dog. It was the MOST rewarding moment of my life seeing him go to live with his new owner. He was a black lab, VERY lovable, and even a bit stubborn. ;D He wanted to please though, and he was the perfect candidate for using the clicker since he loved food and loved learning new things. He was the only dog I've ever trained (so little experience, so much to learn ;D) but I learned a lot just in that time I trained him. I'm just glad I had an 'easy' dog to train for my first time...we sort of learned from each other. I live in good old New England, and love backyard birdwatching/feeding, walking on the beaches in Maine, snowshoeing, skiing, reading up on dog behaviour/training, and learning as much as I can from experienced dog trainers and owners. Can't wait to meet you all!

Hi, I'm new here. About 3 months ago we "found" 2 female black german shepherd puppies that were somehow abandoned at about 10 weeks old. We took them in, got them in good shape and have kept one and found a good home for the other. I live in Valdosta, GA and am trying to find a reputable, qualified trainer for basic obedience. Beauty is very well socialized, but is showing signs of wanting to be the dominant dog - we also have a 4 year old female australian shepherd. She also is demonstrating her independence by not coming when called. No one in this area advertises via internet or otherwise. Since we are relatively new to the area, we are having trouble finding someone to help us out without having to go to Tallahassee (an hour away). I know there must be someone in the Valdosta, GA area. The reason for wanting to find a "professional" is that my husband was raised with the "negative" reinforcement training philosophy which I strongly disagree with. Since I never had dogs growing up (we were cat people) I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about . However, I believe that if a "professional" demonstrates that there is a reliable, effective alternative, we'll all be happier. Our Aussie is a dream with NO training problems or bad behaviours - always wanted to please - so we never had discipline disagreements with her. Please help. Also, we keep the 2 dogs in a fenced in pasture (2-3 acres) with 2 horses and plenty of toys, so they get plenty of exercise. We also spend 45 min to an hour a day playing with them, so I don't think boredom is the problem.

Hi ya'll, John Miller here! I've been posting a few times. Been searching for the right forum for me. I have to say I like it here mucho so far. I'm impressed by the openmindedness I have seen here. Not to mention some great knowledge and advice and last but not least friendlyness and humor. Ok, now I've kissed up plenty. I have been training my own and a few other dogs for 15 yrs. Ki, my last dog and best friend died at 14. A perfect dog he was. I miss him deeply. He was Chow/GSD/ Golden. I now have Frankie who is Chow/?. He's great and the reason I'm here. In the past I have used the Koehler method with great success. Although harsh (seemingly) I almost never corrected my dog after he was trained and he was off leash in town all those years. Still I didn't like it. I found the Leerburg site and liked the new Ideas ( for me) in motivational training. I am using a combo of Leerburg style and PP, about 15% correctional. I love to train my dog this way and he is doing great. But I have lots of questions on every aspect of training. My own interests are besides dogs, backcountry hiking,( I live in the beatiful state of Oregon, fishing, music, alturnative health for dogs and people. I have stong opinions that don't always go along with the majority. I have been called all sorts of names by a moderator on the last forum I joined. I can take it. Still it's nice to hold a civil conversation even if we don't agree. I'm not into calling names, just the facts please. I guess I'm a little gun shy from my last experience. Still with faith hope and joy, I plunge once again into the fray. I hope to get to know many of you over time and stick around awhile. Thanks,

Hey John! ;D I'm so happy you finally introduced yourself! Baby steps... I understand. ;D You are allowed to disagree with anyone here. (Even I can take it ) We won't hold it against you. Respect is a two way street. Thats all we want here. Have your opinions and voice them, as long as you don't antagonize you should be fine here. On a side note: If there are any problems anyone can (and should) always feel free to PM me and I'll do whatever I can to help or mediate. I would rather fix the problem than lose a valuable member. I hope to see more of you around!

Greetings
I registered earlier this week after I found this forum during a google search for dog training tips. Our family has "owned dogs" all my life, but now I want to work my way to become a dog handler. I have been maried for two years and my wife and have wanted a dog almost the entire time. We recently perchased a black lab and named her "Blacky" I know, I know that is so unorigional but trust me, the name is a lot better than my wife's first choice. Blacky is a 10 week old lab. I have worked with her everyday at least 3 times a day. on basic obedience. It is already apparent to me that if my dog does not behave or do something right .. it is my fault for not teaching it to her correctly. I hope this forum can help.
cheers

Hi everyone.
We just got a 4 month old aireldale. Jasmine has been with us about a week so far, and she has been a bit challenging in terms of learning "come". I'm familiar with the stubborn tendencies of this breed as we had 2 airedales prior to Jazzy: Noly, who left us in 2001 and Cleo, who crossed the rainbow bridge last November. Cleo would have been 15 last February.
I'm looking forward to giving Jasmine as full and happy a life as her forerunners had. It is quite different around here going form silence to full scale puppy domain, but Becky and I are so thrilled to have a companion around the house again.
I travel a lot so my postings or replies may be sporadic. I'm glad to have found this site!

Welcome to the board, and oh boy, the joys of a puppy! I like the look of the big terriers, but couldn't take the grooming. Please post pictures when you have a chance.
