Introducing Finn TD. Last weekend, we went to a trial out in the country, and he passed his qualifying track on Friday night, and did his first 800 meter title track on Saturday morning. This morning we got up at 3:30 am for a 6 am start somewhere equally remote, and he did his second track and qualifed for the title by 8:30. He's completely knackered. He slept all the way home, and only stopped momentarily to pee before heading off to bed. I am knackered too - it was absolutely nerve wracking today. Last weekend I was just doing it for a lark to see how he would go, but today I really wanted him to qualify, as he scored 190 on his first track. He did throw in one little joke today. When he got to the second indication article near the end of the track, he dropped with it between his paws as he is supposed to. He turned his head back to look at me for approval. I must have been holding my breath or doing something to cue him, but apparently not getting the acknowledgment he was seeking, he picked up the article in his teeth, threw his head back, and held it up for all to see. He was wagging his tail and quite proud of himself. My heart dropped as I was sure this would disqualify him, but apparently there is no rule against it. He just has to find and indicate the article, which he did in memorable style. We ended up with 185 on the second track for a total of 375 and we only needed 340 to pass. And we've still got most of the weekend left. Tonight I will be with the relief of knowing that I finally put a title on my hard headed hound, and that we will never have to track again, unless we want to do it for fun.

Based on Sunday's display of athletic prowress, I think Finn is going after the LCDX - Lizard Catching Dog Excellent.

That's absolutely awesome! Congratulations Finn! Hey Aussienot, do you need to pass CD, UD and WD before doing TD in Australia? I've always fancied getting a working title on Monster (we do some tracking with a local SAR group in the weekends), but haven't yet plucked up the confidence to start training for the CD, since it's partially offleash and includes things like out of sight group stays. Did you have to go through that with Finn? (Here's a link to the NZKC site in case you're not sure what I'm talking about - page 43!) www.nzkc.org.nz/rulesreg_pdfs/dog_training.pdf#search=%22td%20ud%20cd%20dog%20%22

In Aus, the obedience and tracking are completely separate. You don't need to do one before doing the other. Tracking, the competition sport for dogs that need to stay on lead. We started out in competative obedience, but couldn't get Finn through the 3 min drop stays without breaking. It just wasn't that important to me to train through it. NSW has just revamped the competition obedience. CCD is a new title before the CD, and other than the one or two minute stays it is all on lead. www.dogsnsw.org.au/util/doc.jsp?did=98Much easier to obtain, but the CD is now harder.

Looks like your system really is different to ours, then. I'd need to pass our NZ CD to start competitive tracking, and it seems like our CD is a much harder title to get than the Australian CD.
I don't mind doing all the training for CD (which includes retrieves, offleash heeling, scent discrimination, drop on recall), but don't trust him in the out of sight stays!
Maybe I should come and live in Australia instead! ;D
