OK - Got to get this off my chest even though its not as bad as I thought it would be - when we lived in Durban this time of year it was like living in a war zone - but still.
Living in a country where Guy Fawkes and Divali (Hindu festival of lights) falls within a couple of days of one another means that we have had to put up with an awful lot of fireworks lately.
Even the smallest cherry bomb sends my Ana into absolute fits of terror - she has to go and hide in the shower, and then she is torn because she wants to be near us. So she lies in the corner and shivers for hours at a time. Its so frustrating that I cant do ANYTHING to help her. There is no danger to her, but there is nothing I can do to make her understand this. And I guess the sound hurts her ears.
These fireworks are supposed to be illegal - there are official public firework displays in safe places, but people are not allowed to explode them anywhere else. Some of these things are no joke - it sounds like a bomb going off, so no wonder the dogs are terrified.
The kids in our area do STUPID things like put the fireworks in bottles or cans, to make them louder - or they light them and jump over them etc. And their parents WATCH THIS AND ARE FINE WITH IT.
Every year there are so many dogs that get lost because they run away in fear, and lots of kids who hurt themselves.
Now I can understand Divali - but Guy Fawkes? Why do we in South Africa have to celebrate the demise of some guy who tried to blow up parliment in Britain who knows how long ago? I geuss some people just like to have an excuse to make loud banging noises.
