I feel so bad for the dog two doors down. The owners work all day so when they get home at night they turn him loose and he runs the neighborhood.
I have put up with it for years, because I love coal! He is just a goofey Lab and does not have a mean bone in his body....that is...until the other day when he got one of my roosters at 6:30 a.m.! He grabbed the brown one and took him to the front and dropped him. Thankfully, all the rooster lost was his tail feathers!
Duane went down and talked to Crissy about it and just told her the next time he is in our yard, "He is history"....meaning we would take him to the pound.
Tonight he was back, so I caught him and put him in the other kennel, but my poor rooster was so frightened he just kept squawking!
It is really weird...they say chickens are dumb, but my dogs walk right with the roosters and share food with them and there is no problem, because they do not chase them ect., but when the brown one saw Coal, he had a fit, so I brought Coal into the house and Duane called the neighbor. The husband was not home and the wife became hysterical on the phone. Duane told her to grab a leash and come down and get their dog and she just kept saying, "Turn him loose". Duane said he wouldn't do that. They had to come and get him. He asked to talk to the husband, but he wasn't home, so Duane told the wife to have him come down and talk to him when he got home. The wife said, "If you put a bullet in my dogs head I will do the same to you!"
No one had ever said anything about shooting their dog.
Well, I brought Coal into the house so my poor rooster could have some peace, and about a half hr. later the husband came home and came right down. He was very nice and apologetic, and I kept Coal in the house with me while Duane discussed the "problem" with him. Then I brought Coal out and the first thing Nick did was start hitting coal in the face/head! I said, "HEY! Don't do that! It's not his fault! He doesn't know why he is being hit," and Nick said, "Yes, he does...he knows it's because he is down here!"
Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!
So, anyway, Duane told Nick if his wife apologizes for what she said, he will not call the Sheriff because she threatened him. Neither of us had ever said we would shoot Coal, and in fact, Nick told us when Crissy told him Duane was going to shoot him, he told her, "He isn't going to shoot him!"
I sure do want Coal! He is such a fabulous dog...all he needs is exercise and training! I wonder if he will like Montana.........
After things cool down a bit I will talk to them and offer to train him to the underground fence...which they have, but they just put the collar on him and turned him loose in the yard, so no wonder he went through it!
Tonight when I had him too, I fixed his collar. They have a nylon slip collar on him and it was put on wrong so that when it was tightened up, it didn't release.
Did I say I love Coal and want him? ;D
