I would just like to get other people's opinions on what they consider to be essential commands for their dogs to learn.
The ones that my dog know are: sit, come, down, stay (only for short times, working on increasing time and distance), jump and tunnel (we do agility occasionaly just for fun, we don't compete or anything except with the neighbors informally. ;D)
Thanks

My sisters dog knows " check" which means - stop just where you are and wait until I release you. Useful for walking off leash. Also GREAT for agility when teaching the contacts. Then my dog knows " leave it " which can mean " drop that" "stop biting the cat" or "stop irritating that dog" - useful for a dog with a naughty nature.
" look at me" is essential when you are training, or if you want to remove their attention from something - like a dog barking behind a gate or a cat running away.
She also know " out " and " get into your cupboard" for those times when she gets a bit TOO in your face.

I would say the sky is the limit, so to speak. I know a man who taught his 2 Labs something like 66 different words.
Of course I would start out with basic ob commands, "come, sit, down, stay, and the ones or variations of the ones Masha suggested, and then gradually add what ever other words you want them to know. All it takes is time and patience. ;D

Essential commands? The only essential commands in my book are Come, Stay, and Watch. Come and Stay could save your dog's life someday, and Watch is the building block to all other training.
The 'makes a nice house pet' commands are Sit, Drop, Heel, Crate, Stand (for grooming and nail clip) Leave it . . . and possibly 'Stop Licking. ' ;D The ability to go potty on command is most useful as well.
The 'fun games to play' commands are Fetch, and Find it. And of course, anything to do with agility.
