Yesterday on our walk, Pup caught a field mouse. It must have bit him, because he dropped it and didn't want anymore to do with it. Kerra wanted to kill it, but I wouldn't let her. The poor thing was so scarred it ran between my feet and then jumped on me and crawled up onto my back! Those things are really fast! Now, I don't mind hitchhikers as long as they stay on the outside of my clothing, but mice are notorious for running up pantlegs etc., so when it fell to the ground and was heading my way again, I told Kerra it was o.k. to kill it, which she promptly did! I have to admit I still feel bad, and if that ever happens again, I will just call the dogs to heel and beat feet out of there!!

Loey, from the title of the topic, I had visions of wildebeasts stampeding at you ;D! I'm happy it was nothing more than a mousie. Good for Kerra, nice to know her prey instincts are good and sharp! And Amyjo is right, don't let the Raw list hear you let it get away , they'll say it was a waste of a good snack!

Actually, that might be the only thing I would tell people NOT to allow their dogs to munch on, rodents, particularly deer mice, are carriers of hantavirus, and that is one NASTY disease !

Not to diminish Kerra's wonderful defensive action on command, but this post should have vomit disclaimers. First the idea of a mouse crawling up my back makes me shudder. Then the whole 'roadkill for dinner' - yuck. Then add hantavirus- worry worry. And I stumbled in here thinking it would be a Disney story. Sooo disillusioned.

I may be wrong (and I probably am! ;D), but isn't Hantavirus mostly in the warmer climates, like Az. etc? I have never heard of it in our area, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist here.
Something else for me to check on, because wolves/coyotes main food sometimes is rodents, and even the wolves they introduced into Wi are multiplying so quickly, they are going to have to take steps to control them.

Sounds like Loey should be writing "fictional" novels for a living...she sure had us all hooked in there.....and all for a "squeaker" finish...
Good job Loey...
ps...just a quick side note: did any of you hear about the problems they had with a park in Toronto up here recently...? Some kook took a bunch of hotdogs and stuck some blue pesticide in them - apparently this sicko doesn't like dogs in the park and there has been ongoing problems between dog owners and non-dog owners......a couple of dogs who ate them died and several more got sick..they actually called in the forensics teams to scour the park and at one point, had it completely fenced off....they've only found a few more since then (with the same blue stuff) but since the park has been reopened, there have been no other incidents....just goes to show you really got keep an eye on your dogs when out and about...

I've heard of all kinds of stories like that this last couple months Richard. I think in Washington and in Colorado.

Loey, we have recorded cases of hantavirus as far north as Seattle, not many, maybe 12 or 14. Which is an aberrance, it's usually found in the warmer climes like you said. And if I'm turning into the anal retentive germ freak again, please feel free to smack me !
