How long is it gonna take to rehabilitate a former "working dog" (herding) to be a well socialized pet. (The dog retired six months ago.) She seem so mellow and calm but no dog can come near her...as soon as other dog gets close (at least a foot) to her she snaps. She goes into fixation mode (really fixed into the other dog in sight) and I tried to distract her but I'm afraid that it'll result into redirected aggression and snap at me. Is it aggression or she's just being what she used to be (a herding dog)? She's getting 2hrs at least of vigorous exercise a day and sometimes long hikes...is it enough to stimulate her physically?

I am guessing that this happens when you have her out on leash CORRECT? To say that this is NOT aggresion towards other dogs is not possiable without seeing her in person. What I would say though is that you have a few possiables going on here. #1. Herding dog or not she is gaurding her territory, something you see more very strongly with this breed and right now it sounds like YOU are her territory . #2. She probably was never taught that it's ok to be around other dogs so this is something you are going to have to start from the beggining with. #3. Depending on what it is you are expecting of her, she may never get along with other dogs but like I said you need to show her that IGNORING THEM is far better than KILLING THEM . How old is this dog? I am not saying that she can't be rehabilitated but alot of that depnds on how old she is and how much patients you have. Herding breeds for the most part can be a bit SNAKEY with other dogs, or other animals except for their charges. I found this out with my own dog, not my GSD but my BC. I would start SLOWLEY training her to LEAVE IT, IGNORE IT, and see how it goes. Like I said she may NEVER be a dog social dog but you should be able to manage the behavior. Have you ever seen her reactions towards other dogs OFF LEASH? See that would be what I would want to know, is she this snappy without a human in the picture or does the behavior only surface when she is on leash? Keep up posted

Honestly, this BC isn't mine, it's a co-workers dog. Brownie is six years old, for what I was told she's always on leash because they are still potty training the dog. The owner have a four years old Australian Shepherd and I was told that the AS is dominant over the BC. They had this dog five months ago, a month after she retired from working. When I saw the dog, she was fixated to my dog a GSD so I told my dog to down and stay. I ask brownie's owner to come closer to me. The BC was so fixed at my GSD that when I tap it's hip to get it's attention...it didn't work.
I was also told that she's around other dogs in the farm but there's a fence between them. I was told that no other dog can sniff her except the AS.
